Where the river writes the soil
Before there is a coconut, there is the river.
The Mekong carries silt from a thousand miles of mountain and jungle, laying it down on the low fields of Ben Tre and Long An year after patient year. The water turns brackish as it meets the sea. The soil turns rich beyond belief. No fertilizer has to teach these groves how to grow sweetness — the land does it for us, at Brix 7° to 9°, in a register no other coconut-growing country can quite reach.
